We all know the second half of 2011 was a very difficult time to re-negotiate a contract in Atlantic City. Over three straight years of revenue decline totaling $2 billion really put our backs against the wall for the first time in 40 years of collective bargaining. Most disturbing to us was that during the negotiations from summer all the way through the fall each month’s gross revenue for the city’s casino industry was negative, every one.

In spite of the intense pressure from the casino industry, the media and especially the politicians like Senator Jim Whelan and many others like him, our union did not give up our core issues at the bargaining table. To the contrary, we made decisions which will allow our employers some breathing room in the face of fierce competition from Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland gaming while securing what makes our jobs so valuable and unique to the hospitality industry; namely gold standard, paycheck free health insurance; a pension which will provide dignity in retirement and wage scale that is the envy of hospitality/casino workers all over the east coast.

How did our union maintain its core values and standards while others simply gave them up at the table? The answer is simple. The tireless sacrifice and commitment to coworkers, demonstrated by members of all contract committees involved. The leadership demonstrated by YOUR contract committee is the primary reason why we have secured fair contracts at the four Caesars Entertainment and two Trump Entertainment contracts. We believe that we will soon settle the remaining four contracts with the same protection of our core values demonstrated by Caesars/Trump Committee.

We would be remiss if we did not offer special acknowledgement to the members of the Caesars and Trump Committees who stuck it out through separate 18 hour marathon negotiation sessions which ultimately settled their contracts. In many cases Trump and Caesars committee attended both of these grueling sessions in a demonstration of solidarity that was a spectacular sign that we are one at Local 54. These heros were joined as well by members of the Golden Nugget Committee who were very close to a contract settlement that night with Trump but were unable to move the company on one issue. In addition, there were members of the Hilton, Resorts and Tropicana Committees who showed up to support their fellow members and stay with them through the long night of negotiations.

We believe that without the sacrifice of these special committee members we would not have been able to reach an agreement with either company. We all owe them a special thank you for all their hard work and dedication. We are proud to have had the honor to serve with them through these difficult negotiations. We look forward to settling the other four contracts and we are confident that those committees have the same dedication and commitment to achieve similar results in their negotiations. Thank you again to all who serve on committees and a special thank you for those who gave the extra measure by staying on top of things through out those long, grueling nights in negotiations.

Nosotros sabemos que el 2011 fue un año muy difícil para renegociar un contrato en Atlantic City. La disminución de más de $2 billones de dólares en los ingresos de la industria del juego en los últimos 3 años nos puso entre la espada y la pared por primera vez en 40 años de negociación colectiva. Lo peor fue que durante las negociaciones desde el verano hasta el otoño los ingresos de la industria del casino disminuyeron en todos los casinos

A pesar de la presión tan intensa de la industria de los casinos, la prensa y los políticos como el Senador Jim Whelan y muchos otros como el, nuestro sindicato no cedió en los asuntos mas vitales en la mesa de negociaciones. Por el contrario tomamos decisiones que le permitirán a los empleadores afrontar la fuerte competencia de la industria del juego de Pennsylvania, New York y Maryland, mientras nos aseguramos que nuestros trabajos sean valiosos para la industria hotelera y del juego; con un buen estándar, un sueldo con el seguro de salud gratis, una pensión que nos permita retirarnos dignamente y una escala de sueldos que es la envidia de los trabajadores de la industria hotelera y del juego en toda la costa este.

Como fue que nuestro sindicato mantuvo los estándares y los valores cuando otros los dejaron en la mesa de negociaciones? La respuesta es simple, el incansable sacrificio, el compromiso y el liderazgo que demostraron los miembros involucrados en los comités para el contrato representando a sus compañeros de trabajo. Esta fue la razón por la cual pudimos asegurar los contratos justos con las cuatro compañías de Caesars Entertainment y las dos compañías de Trump Entertainment. Nosotros creemos que pronto llegaremos a un acuerdo con los cuatro contratos que nos faltan y con la misma protección para nuestros valores demostrados por el comité de los comités de Caesars y Trump.

No puedo dejar de reconocer especialmente a los miembros de los comités del Caesars y de Trump que permanecieron en las maratones de negociaciones durante 18 horas cada una y con las cuales finalmente llegamos a un acuerdo. En muchos de los casos los miembros de los comités de Caesars y Trump participaron en estas dos sesiones de negociaciones demostrando su solidaridad lo que es un signo espectacular de que en el Local 54 somos uno. A estos héroes se unieron miembros del comité del Golden Nugget quienes estuvieron muy cerca de llegar a un acuerdo de no ser por un solo desacuerdo. También hubo miembros de los comités del Hilton, Resorts y Tropicana quienes demostraron su apoyo y permanecieron durante toda la noche de negociaciones.

Nosotros creemos que sin el sacrificio de estos miembros del comité no habríamos llegado a un acuerdo con ninguna de las compañías y por esto, todos nosotros debemos agradecerles por su duro trabajo y dedicación. Nos enorgullecemos de haber trabajado con ellos durante estas difíciles negociaciones. Esperamos llegar a un acuerdo en los cuatro restantes contratos y sabemos que estos comités tienen la misma dedicación y el compromiso para alcanzar resultados similares en sus negociaciones. Gracias de nuevoa quienes sirvieron en esos comités y especialmente gracias a aquellos que fueron mas allá permaneciendo toda la noche en las agotadoras negociaciones.
